OrcaFlex is a 'non linear time domain, finite element software program principallyused for the static and dynamic modelling of systems used in offshore constructionenvironment, including marine risers of the flexible and rigidtypes, mooring systems and towed array's'
Orcaflex Version 8.4a7 Manual, Daltongate, Ulverston, Cumbria UK. Has been cited by the following article: Article. Jonkman, «The new modularization framework for the FAST wind turbine CAE tool», presented in 51st AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting and 31st ASME Wind Energy Symposium, Grapevine, Texas, US, 2013, p.
Produced by Orcina it is able to run on any PC compatiblecomputer that has Windows 2000, XP or Vista Theprogram uses Lines, 6D Buoys, 3D Buoys, Vessels, Tethers, Winches, links whch you can add into an offshore environment. The mainphysical elements of the items can be modelled.
Environmental effects such as the Seabed profile, differenttypes of Wave specrums, Wind and currents can be applied to themodel. Initially the Model performs a Static calculation, andassuming the model has been made following the correct practice itshould converge, which yields a static condition *.dat file thatcan be used in design.
The next level of the simulation is to run a dynamic simulation, which yields a *.Sim file
From the Sim file you are able to produce graphs giving dynamicinformation on Forces, Spatial Positions, Accelerationsand Velocity, Dynamic response, and other important values neededto enable greater engineering insight to be gained about thecomponent's being modelled. VIVVortex induced vibration can also be modelled using additionalsoftware modules.
It is possible to import shaded 3D Graphic shape files, toincrease the visual impact of the simulations.
